RDI® Example (DYAD)

This is an example of a session involving an RDI® dyad (clients needs to be able to participate with a peer at their level without significant support). Prior to this clip, both girls spent many years with their parents working on developmental milestones and breakdown areas. Once they were developmentally ready they were paired together to participate in opportunities that fostered, problem solving, collaboration, emotional engagement, and a true friendship. Our favorite part of this clip is when the girls celebrate in excitement about their accomplishment of busting the door open. Notice how they celebrate and even comment, “Let’s do it again,” following all of their efforts to help one another. This type of experience builds and establishes a true episodic memory (memory that involves an emotional experience and a learning opportunity).

RDI® Example (Referencing Nonverbal Communication )

This short clip shows a mom supporting her daughter at the grocery store in making discoveries about nonverbal communication, specifically eye gaze and some head gestures. Prior to this clip, this mother and daughter focused on many similar types of opportunities in the home setting, in addition to practicing this with her father. It was time to expand her understanding and try it in the community! Notice how her mom gets down at her daughter’s eye level so she can guide her to see what she is gazing at. Once her daughter makes a choice, her mom gives her feedback (mostly nonverbally). This demonstrates how a parent can effectively support her child and offer opportunities for growth while helping her be successful in a community setting.

 

RDI® Example (Guided Participation)

This clip is a good example of a dad supporting his son to participate in a meaningful real life activity. Prior to the clip, this father and son spent months collecting and sorting items by glass vs. cans. This established a guided opportunity which ultimately resulted in what you see here, a trip to the recycling center! Be aware of how the dad demonstrates what needs to be done and how his son responds to his dad’s nonverbal communication. In response, Andrew joins his dad in carrying out the many tasks involved, without direct prompting. Notice how excited and competent he appears while involved in a community based activity. It is important to pay attention to how his dad slows down and adjusts his support so his son can be successful, especially when he is counting the money he earned! Also notice that his sister had the role of taping the interaction which helped her play a part in supporting her brother’s growth.

RDI® Example (Self-Reflection)

This clip offers an example of a mom supporting her son in reflecting on his progress on goals they developed together (becoming more independent in the community and refraining from talking about special interest topics with others while doing so). Notice how she encourages him to make discoveries and refrains from giving him the answers. During this process, she uses a visual support, allows processing time, communicates using indirect cues and specific feedback and shares her perspective. Having regular discussions like this have resulted in her son having an increase in self-awareness, self-regulation, and independence.

Occupational Therapy Example

This clip is the culmination of a 2 year OT program where Zach developed many critical skills that he did not have, including balance, motor planning, bilateral coordination, and sequencing. He also gradually developed better self regulation, self control, body awareness, and organization, all of which allowed him to interact in meaningful age level activities with his sister Olivia. We love how he is so focused, in control, and emotionally connected throughout this activity. Both Zach and Olivia are having fun together, the way siblings should!

 

RDI® Example (Collaboration)

This clip illustrates a true collaboration between a teen and his mom. Together they are enjoying generating different ways to dance. Notice how they fluidly add ideas, monitor one another, and partake in each other’s moves. Our favorite part however is when Adam spins and twirls his mom. This is such a warm and connected moment, which resulted in a long lasting, emotional memory. It is probably no surprise to hear that this family continues to enjoy many “dance parties” together.
